Malaria prophylactics
- Mozambique is a chloroquine resistant area and therefore chloroquine is totally ineffective. More recommendable is a combination of daramal and paludrine, the former being taken once and week and the latter every day. The drugs are effective within 24 hours, but doctors suggest starting the course a week before to ascertain whether your body is intolerant of the drugs. Intense side effects may well be experienced. Larium and fanzidar, the two most common prophylactics, have side effects potentially far worse than the malaria itself! Furthermore, most allopathic prophylactics conceal the symptoms and prevent diagnosis of malaria until it is so advanced that it becomes truly dangerous, rather than just unpleasant, as malaria is if treated in time.
- For those not keen to take chemicals, there are homeopathic prophylactics available. Weleda Pharmacies have a prophylactic in liquid form, to be taken 3 days before entering the area onwards. A combination of Chin. Arsn, Chin. Sulph and Malaria off is also effective and devoid of side effects. These need to be taken from 1 week beforehand, and continued until one week afterwards.
- Remember, there is no such thing as an infallible malaria prophylactic. The only sure prevention is to not get mozzie bites! Only a very small percentage of mozzies carry malaria, so a few bites does not mean that you have malaria! Homeopaths also recommend taking a vitamin B complex or large amounts of garlic (in tablet form for the sake of your associates!) which makes the blood unpalatable to mosquitoes - very effective, but not entirely infallible.
- In the unlikely event of contracting malaria, it is easy and quick to cure - if caught in time. With prompt and appropriate medical attention the symptoms should be no worse than a bout of ‘flu.
